The Schonstedt u-LOCATE is a professional underground utility locator system built to reduce the risk of accidental utility strikes during excavation, trenching, landscaping, fencing, and construction work. It allows operators to detect, trace, and estimate the depth of buried conductive utilities using a receiver and 1-watt transmitter. The receiver uses visual direction arrows and variable audio response to guide the operator toward the line, helping separate the intended utility from surrounding buried materials. Depth estimation is available at the press of a button, while the high-contrast display provides clear operating information in both bright and low-light jobsite conditions.
Two receiver variations are available. The u-LOCATE is a single-frequency model with an 82 kHz active locating frequency and 50/60 Hz passive power detection. It is suited for general utility avoidance and tracing work where a straightforward active-frequency system is preferred. The u-LOCATE+ adds a 33 kHz frequency for expanded locating flexibility and a 512 Hz sonde mode for locating non-conductive pipes, cable ducts, and conduits when used with a compatible sonde. The u-LOCATE+ can locate sondes at depths up to 15 feet, depending on sonde type, while both models support active utility detection to 19 feet.
The transmitter can apply 33 kHz or 82 kHz signals through direct connection, while inductive operation uses 82 kHz. A 1-watt boost mode helps improve signal application when greater output is needed. The receiver runs on six AA batteries and the transmitter uses four D-cell batteries. The complete kit weighs approximately 9 pounds with batteries installed and provides about 20 hours of typical operating time. Rugged housings, weather-resistant construction, ergonomic handling, and an integrated accessory tray make the system practical for regular use across utility, construction, and municipal jobsites.
